I can spot and identify about 100 species of birds. But of what use is this knowledge?
Of what use is a degree in art or a major in literature?
Of what use is history and philosophy?
Of what use is a hobby of collecting stamps or woodworking?
Of what use is music or sport?
Of what use is it to appreciation of nature?
What is the utility of love, friendship, dignity or happiness?
It can be argued that several things most valuable to us are ‘useless’. At least in economic terms.
But that which is valuable isn’t merely that which has utility. Value and utility is often mutually exclusive.
