Several medieval maps of the world were incomplete, with unchartered territories. These terriotories were often marked with dragons, sea-monsters and other mythological creatures, along with quotes such as ‘here be dragons’.
Although not a single dragon or sea-monster existed in the territories they had already charted out, these map-makers found it easy to imagine that they thrived in those uncharted parts of the world.
When charting a new course, we are likely to be warned of danger from mythical creatures, since our fear of the unknown often takes the shape of these exotic beasts.
