When I see a pressing problem at work, how does it make me feel?
I use this question as a thumb rule. Does the problem make me feel frustrated? Helpless? Are my best efforts at solving it met with resistance? If so, the organization’s culture does not want me to solve that problem. I am not a culture fit.
Alternatively, do my eyes shine when I see a problem to be solved? Does the problem fill my workday with purpose, and does solving it lead me to a more exciting problem? Do my colleagues rally around and help me solve it? Am I appreciated for solving it?
The degree to which you feel empowered to solve pressing problems is the degree to you are working in the right organization.
