It is easy to express a point of view in conversation. It is a little scary to make the same point in writing. Scarier still, is to publish an essay on the topic. The scariest of them all is to make a presentation in front of an audience.
The harder it is to undo what you say, the scarier it feels. It is easy to ‘take back’ something you say in conversation. ‘Oh, I was just thinking aloud’. You cannot undo a published essay or a presentation, especially if you have a large audience.
Our best work happens not in conversations, but with projects we ship. Our fear gets in the way of doing this work. The only remedy is to get familiar with this fear, befriend it, and seat it in the audience.
That which is worth doing cannot be undone.
