The cost of carrots and sticks

Attending a class out of one’s own interest is superior to being present to satisfy a mandatory attendance policy.

Studying a subject out of one’s own interest is superior to studying to merely pass an examination.

Excelling in one’s job for its own sake is superior to working to check off a quarterly target.

Mandatory attendance, examinations and quarterly targets are external rewards and punishments meant to increase compliance. However, this compliance comes at the cost – the joy of doing something for its own sake.
