Back in 350 BC, Aristotle believed that women had fewer teeth than men. The Western world took his word for it for about 2000 years, until somebody decided to count.
Aristotle was a towering figure, whose words people respected while suspending their own judgement. It was only during the Scientific Revolution that the West realized that he was wrong on several counts – that the rest of the universe didn’t revolve around the earth and that women and men had the same number of teeth.
How many other outdated myths continue to persist in our midst because we have never bothered to count?
