To think out of the box

Twyla Tharp once said, “you have to start with a box to think out of the box”.

Jazz musicians base their improvisations on standard music theory and rigid rhythm patterns.

To stage an act, improv artists are prescribed rules to stick to.

Creativity isn’t just novelty. It is novelty that works. This makes it the brain child of both freedom and constraints.
